Our Process
Once your child has received the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the next step is to decide what type of intervention you would like to provide to your child. If your doctor recommended ABA Therapy in your home, then you have come to the right place.
Eastside Social Skills Therapy has Program Managers who are Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) who will meet with new families and help them set up an intervention program in their home. Each child will have a customized plan that will work for their individual needs, as every child and family is different and unique. The Program Manager’s role is to develop, train and supervise your child’s program. Behavior Technicians follow the plan developed by the Program Manager and they do the actual 1:1 intervention with your child.
The process begins with the Program Manager:
- Parents fill out a New Client In-Take & Assessment Form and set up a face to face interview with one of our Program Managers.
- The Program Manager will review any formal assessments that you can provide regarding your child’s diagnosis and development and will conduct an informal assessment of their own through direct observation of your child.
- The Program Manager will then development an initial Treatment Plan that is designed to meet the needs of your child based upon their observation and assessment results.
- Once the Treatment Plan is developed, then a program binder is assembled with specific instructions, data sheets, and visual supports that are needed for a team of Behavior Technicians to implement.
Creating a distraction-free space
Parents order the necessary educational materials and provide a space in their home where their child can learn that is free from distraction and well organized so that their child can be set up for success.
- Materials such as: Language cards, workbooks, toys (cars, blocks, dolls, etc.), a table and chair, puzzles, arts and crafts, books, board games, bubbles, play-dough, etc.
- Office supplies to manage their child’s program binder: 3 hole punch, paper, pens, sheet protectors, labels, dry erase markers, crayons, hand sanitizer and tissues.
- Reinforcers are items that can be used to help motivate the child to perform new behaviors that we want to teach. You know your child best and what your child likes the most. Saving these favorite items for therapy sessions and not allowing the child to have them for free will help your child’s therapy sessions be all the more successful.
Intervention begins with the Behavior Technicians:
- Behavior Technicians work one-on-one with clients between 10-40 hours per week, typically in 2-3 hour sessions. Some families only have 1 session a day, while others may have 3 sessions a day using 3 different staff members.
- ABA Intervention teaches social skills that are age appropriate and the programs will cover all areas of development including motor skills, communication, social skills, self-care, cognitive, academics, and play.
On-Going Supervision:
- Training and Supervision of staff for your child’s program is on-going and averages between 5%-10% of the total number of hours of intervention your child receives per week.
- Supervision is conducted through weekly or bi-weekly team meetings where everyone who works with the child gets together and collaborates on services; through direct observation of the Behavior Technician working with the child during one of their scheduled sessions; and individual meetings with the Behavior Technician to receive constructive feedback on therapy techniques and to gain more knowledge of the principals of Applied Behavior Analysis.
- The Program Manager will also be available for Parent Coaching to help parents with generalization of skills the child has learned with the intervention and to help with a plan to reduce problem behaviors that they may encounter with their child at home. Our goal is to help parents feel empowered by learning how to identify their child’s function of behavior and to give them the tools to make the right decisions to ensure that their child is compliant with their requests and can live a productive life.
- Your child’s treatment program is updated regularly, based on data collected and goals set based on the child’s needs and abilities.
After Treatment:
- Once a child is ready to transition into their school district we can assist with selecting the right placement for that child.
